The Blue Pond is located on the left bank of the Bieigawa River, near the town of Biei, Hokkaido, Japan. It is a popular tourist destination primarily in the summer, spring and fall. The pond was created after erecting a dam to protect the area from mudflows that might occur from a nearby volcano. The blue color is not fully explained, however it is believed to related to the presence of aluminum hydroxide in the water that reflects the shorter wavelength light blue the same way the atmosphere does. The lake color changes throughout the day with respect to light and reflection. The pond has become a bit famous after Apple Computers used the image with the OS X Mountain Lion.
