Glow in the Dark Beach!

Some call this Heaven on Earth, others say The Sea of Stars, but Glow in The Dark Beach seems most fitting to me :).  This is Vaadhoo Island in the Maldives chain. It is located on the equator southwest of Sri Lanka in the Indian Ocean.   Look up you see stars, look down you see stars.. a dreamy place, no?   The glow in the dark is a natural phenomena similar to the lightening bug.  The light is a simple marine microbe that emits a beautiful blue glow.  They can be seen when billions of these critters are disturbed in the water .   It is a species of plankton known as dinoflagellates.   It's cell membrane lights up by responding to electrical impulses when oxygen is stirred up in the water.  Typically the lights can only been seen in shallow waters along the beaches edge, crashing waves, boats wake and even footprints in the sand. The glow is known as a mircoflash :).  The lights occur most commonly in spring or summer, so plan you vacation accordingly.  I've seen this occur in Long Beach, CA maybe 10 years ago and also in Rockport, Texas.  It's a beautiful sight and worth a flight (well,  a plane crashed today over Ukraine.. so I am not sure about this).   The beaches are 1/2 bad in the daytime either :)!!!
