Live On a What?

Aogashima (青ヶ島?) is an active volcanic Japaneses island in the Philippine Sea.   It's approximately 222 miles south of Tokyo and it's the southernmost and most isolated inhabited island of the Izu archipelago.  It's also within the boundries of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park.  The total population of the island is 170 citizens.  The island is a few miles wide and surrounded by very steep rugged cliffs of layered volcanic deposits.
Fortunately, for the locals, the volcano hasn't erupted since 1785.  Most of the islanders are Japanese and live just outside of the crater, on the north end.  Few tourists visit the island.  There's not much to do on Aogashima, but the island does have a community spa that features a natural geothermal kettle, a salt factory, a volcanic blowhole and free camping facilities.  Most of the cooking on the island is done with geothermal energy as well.
