Whistling Island

La Gomera is the smallest island of the Canary Islands (Spain).  It is home to an ancient language of Silbo Gomero or the El Silbo meaning 'the whistle'.  It is a language spoken by the inhabitants of the island that is used to communicate across deep ravines and valley throughout the island and is literally whistling.  The whistle will travel over 2 miles on the island is much more effective than shouting.  The language is still used by the islanders and he a required course in school.  The origins of this language are unknown but it is believed that it originated from Africa.  The language is now a whistled from the Spanish language and is easily understood in the brain as is all languages. There are only 2 vowels and 4 consonants in the language.. each are given different intensity, duration and style.
