Cat Ruled World!

I've blogged about a pig island, a rabbit island and now it's time to blog about an island ruled by CATS!!!!  (my favorite)   The island of Tashirojima, Japan is home to less than 100 humans but several hundred cats.  The cats have dominated the island since about the 1700s as cats served to protect silkworms from predators.  Silkworms were vital for production of their textiles.  The cats were well fed (and still are) by local fisherman and soon litter and litter of kittens arrived.  Apparently there is a small shrine on the island in honor of the cats.  The island was very close to the epicenter of the 2011 Tokohu earthquake which resulted in the ensuing tsunami.  Fortunately,  the island suffered little damage as the village is built on a hillside..  It is said that the cats were behaving strangely just before the tsunami hit.
