On the lovely Marieta Islands (Islas Marietas), you will find a hidden beach that's not so hidden anymore thanks to social media. The Marieta Islands are off the cost of Puerto Vallarta and remain uninhabited, yet are visited by hundreds of tourists daily. In the early 1900s, the Mexican government conducted military testing on the island including various bombings and explosions. Unfortunately, the land was damaged leaving unnatural caves and unusual rock formations. That being said, some of these changes aren't so bad after all :), including that of the hidden beach! In the 1960s, Jacques Costeau ignited an international uproar regarding the protection of the islands with great success. Today, the Marieta Islands are a National Park and national treasure. Not only is no one allowed to fish or build on the islands, they are also not allowed to legally step foot on the islands as well. It appears that walking along the sandy beach is tolerated. If you want to visit the beach, you'll need to take 45 minute boat ride and obtain permission from the appropriate Mexican authorities. And to get to the beach, you must squeeze through a small tunnel under the earth :).
