Giant's Land

Ireland's Giant Causeway is located on the northeast coast of Northern Ireland, near the town of Bushmills in the county of Antrim.  Here you will find a beach with giant interlocking columns along the coast. These colunms were created about 50 plus million years ago as a result of an ancient volcanic eruption.   It is estimated that there are about 40,000 interlocking columns of basalt.  The tallest are about 39 feet high and the solidified lava in the cliffs is 92 feet high at it's highest.  The Giant Causeway (legend) was build by a giant ;).   The legend tells of a story between an Irish giant and a Scottish Giant who were challenged to fight,  however they needed a causeway to cross the North Channel.  There are apparently several variations of this story,  but apparently the causeway was destroyed.  Across from the sea,  there are identical basalt columns (from the same lava flow).  The site has become a popular tourist attraction during our century.  A Giant Causeway Tramway had been built in the 1960s.  Visitors can still walk on the basalt columns along a 1/2 mile area.  There has been some controversy regarding a few of the exhibits that contradict creationism.   Today some explanation at the visitor center regarding creationists ideas is now on the site.
