Larung Gar is a town and a Buddhist academy of 10,000 people located in Serthar County of Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in the traditional region of Kham, China. It is predominately inhabited by monks making this one of the largest (if not the largest) religious institutes in the world. It founded by Jigme Phuntsok around the Serthar Institute. The campus around Larung Gar is enormous. Houses for monks and nuns sprawl over the valley and up the surrounding mountains. A huge wall through the middle of Larung separate the monk side from the nun side. Larung Gar is not along the typical tourist route and few foreigners enter Larung Gar. At times, foreigners have been prevented for visiting, but is it becoming more increasing accessible. The area does have a hotel, guest house and restaurant for those visiting. A new "Temple of Death" has been built near the institute making the area a tourist attraction.
